Welcome to the Ramkin Rattery

Feeding Your Rats

I currently feed my rats the Shunamite Mix, which is a good way of varying their diet so they do not get picky, and ensuring they have their ideal nutrition requirements.

The Shunamite Diet:

As created by Alison Campbell. The full mix and its proportions can be found here

In general I vary the cereals as much as possible, and change the flavour of the dog kibble with each new bag. Rats are not too keen on "new" foods, so you may need to introduce it to them slowly. But, because they get bored, you need still need to keep some variety hence the changes I make.

Kittens collected from me will be provided with a small supply of the mix they are used to, and I am happy to explain in-depth at any time.

Dietary Supplements:

Fresh fruit and vegetables are a must. A bowl of peas or similar, cooked or even straight from the freezer, in water is a wonderful game for them, particularly in the warmer months.

Generally rats will eat most things, but please avoid foods that are too high in protein once they are 12 weeks or older. Fatty and sugary foods such as rodent chocolate drops are OK as a very occasional treat, but it is hard to get a rat to the gym!

Making Your Own Mix:

For new owners who would like to use a feed based upon the Shunamite diet, but who might find the volumes it uses awkward to work with, I may be able to provide batches of the mix I use at any given time upon request.
